MYANMAR : curiosity and contradictions

I want to dedicate this chapter of my trip to the curiosities and contradictions that make me  a lot of fun along this journey through this Country, Myanmar, still little known ...I will not mention as a curiosity that, both before entering the house as well as in the sacred places, you must take off your shoes; but it is useful to know that, while sitting, you never point your feet towards Buddha images nor to the elderly, because it is a sign of rudeness or offense, because the feet are  the lowest part of the body and therefore the less noble; therefore is inconvenient to touch people's heads as the highest and noblest part of the body that give respect ...
The first thing that catches the eyes of those who arrive in Myanmar is the fact that both men and women dress like a skirt, a kind of Saron, the Longyi. Although longyi is the generic name for this type of skirt, the same takes different names when 
it comes to Longyi Men (paso) or women (tamein).

• The second thing that will catch your attention and the special make-up that both men and women paint on their face: it is a lighter-colored yellow or powder, beige color, which is extracted from the wood of the Thanakha tree. 

 It is "grating" on a stone and mixes the water so you have a fluid substance to be applied with a paint decided on the cheeks, forehead and nose.

When I ask them why the answers are from the most vain, to be more attractive, to the strangest, which states that in time ...... Always perhaps withening more the skin, yet others say that already applying to children is avoided growth of pimples and skin will be more smooth and healthy (actually Tanaka powder is also applicable on the rest of the body wanting ...)


• Another peculiarity of men of Myanmar is the daily consumption of Betel nut, taken together with other spices wrapped in a Bethel leaf Of pepper and that is placed in the mouth between the cheek and teeth, favoring the slow dissolution, which induces , who uses it, to spit the red liquid in excess anywhere as it stimulates salivation (you can see  anywhere special spittoons to eliminate excess of spittle!). 

This use so assiduous of Betel nut  reduces the red teeth and in ruin, in the long run, the enamel irreparably! The use, apparently believes that an alkaloid found in Berel walnut to give euphoria and energy, but those who consume it is not risk-free, because it is addictive and leads carcinomas of the oral tract.













• Another incongruity of this wonderful country has to have the right guidance but the wheels of cars are on the right as in English-speaking countries ... Which makes driving extremely dangerous here !!! (imagine having to overtake on the left being, however, you at right side !!) This derives from the fact that Myanmar buys the car from Thailand which however has the Anglo-Saxon guide system !!!

Voglio dedicare questo capitolo del mio viaggio alle curiosità ed alle contraddizioni che  mi hanno molto divertito lungo  questo  viaggio attraverso questo Paese ancora poco conosciuto...  
Non citerò come curiosità il fatto che sia prima di entrare in casa cosi come nei luoghi sacri ci si deve togliere le scarpe; ma è utile sapere che, da seduti, non si puntano mai i piedi verso le immagini di Budda ne verso persone anziane, perchè segno di offesa o scortesia giacché i piedi sono la parte piu bassa del corpo; altresì è sconveniente toccare la testa delle persone poiché la parte più alta e nobile del corpo a cui portare rispetto...

• La prima cosa che salta agli occhi a chi arriva in Myanmar è il fatto che sia uomini che donne vestono una specie di gonna,una specie di saron, il Longyi. Anche se longyi è il nome generico per indicare questo tipo di gonna, lo stesso prende nomi differenti se si tratta di Longyi per uomo(paso) o per donna(tamein)

• La seconda cosa che attirerà la vostra attenzione e lo speciale make-up che sia uomini che donne dipingono sul loro viso: si tratta di una polvere color giallo o più chiaro, color beige, che si estrae dal  legno dell'albero di Thanakha  che si "grattugia" su una pietra e si mescola all'acqua in modo da averne una sostanza fluida da applicare con decise spennellature sulle gote, fronte e sul naso. Quando chiedo loro del perché le risposte sono dalle più vanesie, per essere più attraenti, alle più strane in cui si dice che nel tempo ......schiarisca sempre più la pelle, altri ancora dicono che applicandolo già da bimbi si evita la crescita dei brufoli e la pelle sarà più liscia e sana ( in realtà il..... Si applica anche sul resto del corpo volendo...)

• Altra particolarità degli uomini del Myanmar è il consumo quotidiano di noce di Betel, assunta assieme ad altre spezie avvolte in una foglia Di pepe di Betel e che viene posta in bocca tra la guancia ed  i denti, favorendone il lento scioglimento, il che induce chi la usa a sputare il liquido rosso in eccesso ovunque poiché stimola la salivazione ( vi sono ovunque speciali sputacchiere per eliminare la saliva in eccesso!). Questo utilizzo così assiduo della noce di Betel però riduce i denti rossi e ne rovina a lungo andare lo smalto irrimediabilmente! L'uso pare indica un alcaloide presente  nella noce di Betel a dare euforia ed energia , ma non sono esenti da rischi chi la consuma perché da assuefazione e porta carcinomi del tratto buccale.

• Altra incongruenza di questo meraviglioso Paese è di avere la guida a destra ma i volanti delle auto sono a destra come nei paesi anglosassoni... Il che rende guidare qui estraente pericoloso!!!( immaginate dover sorpassare a sinistra essendo però voi alla guida a destra!!) Qiesto deriva dal fatto che il Myanmar compra le auto dalla Tailandia che però ha il sistema di guida anglosassone!!!
